The game was developed by Frogwares and Focus Home Interactive published it. Developers Frogwares have described The Testament of Sherlock Holmes as their biggest & most beautiful game. The game was released on 20th of September, 2012 in Europe and in North America on 25th of September, 2012, after being delayed from an original 2010 release. The game is based on the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, who is the protagonist of 56 short stories & 4 novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The game itself presents an original story & plot that is not based on Arthur Conan Doyle's works. The Testament of Sherlock is set in the London of year 1898, with Sherlock presented as the main suspect in a case in which he is unable to prove his innocence. The player assumes the role of Sherlock Holmes, he faces an open investigation & decides which leads to follow, & which to ignore. The players can handle & inspect clues, re-enact crimes & use the deduction system of game to make their own decisions about the innocence & guilt of suspects. Distinct questioning approaches change the course of an interrogation by letting Sherlock Holmes catch suspects off-guard or gather valuable information. As more events happen that call into question the nature of Sherlock's changing character, player take on the role of Watson & is required to figure out if the famous detective is capable of such brutal actions or if something deeper is at play.
