Tropico Review: Tropico is a series of construction & management simulation computer games. It was developed by PopTop Software & published by Gathering of Developers in April 2001. The player asssumes the role of "El Presidente," who is the ruler of an island in the Caribbean during the Cold War era from the 1950s onward. Tropico game is tongue-in-cheek in its presentation of banana republics, uses a great deal of humor while still referencing such topics as electoral fraud, totalitarianism, & the interventions of powerful companies & the Cold War superpowers (i.e the United States and Soviet Union). The game, Tropico features Latin-styled Dominican music, performed by Daniel Indart. Tropico won the Original Music Composition category in the 2002 Interactive Achievement Awards. The game has several expansion packs & new editions.
Tropico Gameplay: The main goal of any Tropico game is to stay in power. If the island's populace disapprove of player's actions, they would vote their leader out of office. Individual powers and factions can also end or disrupt El Presidente's rule. The Rebels can defeat the army & storm the Presidential palace. If army is dissatisfied, it can stage a coup d'état. In the game, the player is able to issue a number of governmental edicts, some require funding or the availability of particular buildings. The edicts are used to achieve various game effects, from appeasing superpowers by openly praising them, in order to instating martial law or giving a tax break to the populace.
